Goði Apprentice (Norse) is a homebrew background for a character trained in the religious, legal, and hospitality customs of a respected Norse ritual leader.

A goði, sometimes written gothi, is a freeperson of high reputation who leads religious ceremonies and community feasts. Anyone who holds more land than they can farm themselves usually has a public association with one goði, trusting that person to represent them at Things and speak with standing in the community. When a goði is not needed for spiritual or public duties, they act as any other freeperson would.

As an apprentice to a goði, you have learned the practices but have not yet gained the reputation needed to gather followers of your own. You help your mentor maintain the sacred grove where ceremonies take place, prepare ritual spaces, observe disputes, welcome guests, and learn which customs hold a community together.

• Tool Proficiencies: helping with ceremonies taught you proficiency with the herbalism kit.

Custom demands that guests be fed and housed, and your connection to a goði gives that custom extra force.

By showing the wrist-ring that marks your bond to your goði, you are treated as an honored guest in Norse communities. Jarls with halls may value the prestige of hosting you, inns may welcome you, and ordinary homes may take you in hoping for luck or the favor of the gods.

You can secure free modest lodging and food for yourself and up to five companions by sharing news, helping with chores, or honoring local traditions.

You have advantage on Charisma (Persuasion) checks made to request simple hospitality, such as shelter from a storm or a seat at a feast.
