Goði

A goði is a leader with religious and political weight, especially familiar from Icelandic material. The title is connected to sacred duties, feasts, followers, and legal influence rather than to a modern separation of church and state.

For a campaign, a goði can be a ritual specialist, local power broker, keeper of custom, mediator at a þing, or patron whose authority depends on reputation and followers.

  • Leads seasonal rites, sacrifices, funerals, or oath ceremonies.
  • Interprets custom when a dispute has no easy answer.
  • Knows which families are feuding and why.
  • Offers lawful cover for a dangerous mission.
  • Opposes magic or conduct that threatens the community's relationship with gods and land spirits.
