Religion
In this world, the Old Norse beliefs are still prevalent throughout Scandinavia and the lands where Vikings have settled. Most people believe in the Æsir, Vanir, and Jǫtnar (Jotuns) as powerful, god-like races.
To better integrate with the standard cosmology of Dungeons & Dragons, the following mythological framework is used:
The Divine Conflict
Long ago, the major super-powerful races lived in peace. These included:
- The Æsir – gods of order, war, and leadership
- The Vanir – gods of fertility, nature, and wisdom
- The Jǫtnar (Jotuns) – primal forces of chaos and the wild
- A mysterious fourth group, unnamed in most surviving stories
Eventually, the Æsir, Vanir, and Dragons formed an alliance and banished the fourth group to distant realms:
- The Abyss — a churning land of chaos and demons
- The Nine Hells — a rigid realm of law and devils
Though the Jotuns did not participate in this war, their refusal to choose a side earned them lasting mistrust from the other divine races.
