Þing

A þing is a public assembly where free people gather for law, judgment, negotiation, announcements, alliances, and social business. It is one of the most useful Viking Age institutions for campaign play because it turns private conflict into public drama.

• Laws are recited and remembered.
• Disputes are heard before witnesses.
• Compensation, outlawry, or settlement may be declared.
• Leaders build support through gifts, speeches, and alliances.
• Feuds can be cooled down or made worse.

At the table, a þing gives players choices beyond combat. They can gather testimony, expose a lie, call witnesses, negotiate compensation, challenge a bully, win public trust, or accept a costly settlement to prevent bloodshed.
