Scrolls and Spell Scrolls

Scrolls that are not spell scrolls can be used by anyone. Example: Scroll of Protection

A spell scroll bears the words of a single spell, written in a mystical cipher.

  • If the spell is on your class’s spell list, you can cast it without material components.
  • If not, the scroll is unintelligible.
  • Casting uses the spell's normal casting time.
  • Once cast, the scroll crumbles to dust.
  • Interrupted casting does not destroy the scroll.
  • If concentration is required, you must maintain it.

If the scroll contains a spell above your casting level:

  • Make a spellcasting ability check.
  • DC = 10 + the spell's level.
  • On failure, the spell fades from the scroll with no effect.
Spell Level Rarity Save DC Attack Bonus
Cantrip Common 13 +5
1st Common 13 +5
2nd Uncommon 13 +5
3rd Uncommon 15 +7
4th Rare 15 +7
5th Rare 17 +9
6th Very Rare 17 +9
7th Very Rare 18 +10
8th Very Rare 18 +10
9th Legendary 19 +11

Wizards can copy spell scrolls like from a spellbook.

  • Check: Intelligence (Arcana) DC = 10 + spell level
  • Success: spell is copied
  • Failure: scroll is destroyed
  • Time/Cost: 2 hours and 50 gp per level

Order of Scribes: May use Wizardly Quill, reducing time to 2 minutes per level.

A spellcaster can create a scroll for a known/prepared spell.

  • Proficiency in Arcana
  • Provide required material components
  • Spend time and money (see table below)
  • Cantrip scrolls function as if cast by a 1st-level caster
Spell Level Time Cost
Cantrip 1 Day 15 gp
1st 1 Day 25 gp
2nd 3 Days 250 gp
3rd 1 Workweek 500 gp
4th 2 Workweeks 2,500 gp
5th 4 Workweeks 5,000 gp
6th 8 Workweeks 15,000 gp
7th 16 Workweeks 25,000 gp
8th 32 Workweeks 50,000 gp
9th 48 Workweeks 250,000 gp

The typical market price for a scroll is twice the scribing cost.
