Niðaróss
Niðaróss is one of the largest and most important towns in Norway during the Viking Age. Nestled deep in the Þróndheimsfjorden, it serves as a major port for the region. This page describes our version of Niðaróss around 800 A.D.
At this time, the town is home to around 100–200 families. While it isn’t quite large enough to support permanent standalone shops, it boasts a lively and well-traveled marketplace. Most business takes place in homes, some of which have accessory structures dedicated to crafts or trade.
People of Interest
Jarl Ásgeirr Axelson Tall and strong, Ásgeirr looks every bit the ideal Norseman. His beard is neatly trimmed, and his hair is always combed—usually tied back, though never braided. His clothing is thick and durable, accented with colorful tablet-woven trim in linen or wool to complement the outfit.
Ásgeirr believes he is favored by the gods—and lives accordingly. Known for his prowess in battle, he recently led a successful raid across the sea to the far side of Caledonia. He returned with substantial treasure and generously shared it with his crew, earning loyalty and respect from many in the town.
Hulda Harsdottir Hulda is Ásgeirr’s wife and the town seer. Tall and slender, she may appear frail at first glance, but the way she carries herself—and the fire in her eyes—reveals a woman who has endured much and grown stronger for it. Her long blonde hair is always immaculately braided, and her clothing, though practical, is adorned with careful embroidery and trimmed with silk or fine fur.
As both a healer and bone reader, Hulda is respected and sometimes feared. She is known to divine the future by casting bones and interpreting their patterns.
Torvald Grimstein A well-respected goliath warrior, Torvald teaches Glima (traditional Norse wrestling) to many of the town’s youth. He is also a skilled stonecrafter and stonemason, responsible for much of the town’s foundational work. Torvald values honorable combat and believes every fight is a lesson—especially when both fighters grow from the experience.
