Draugr & Gjenganger
Restless dead from Norse and Scandinavian tradition: grave-haunting, revenge-driven, physically dangerous, and socially terrifying.
In the North
Draugr are excellent barrow and ship-burial undead. Gjenganger work better as returning dead who trouble the living because of murder, oath-breaking, or unfinished revenge.
Myth and Folklore
Draugr in saga tradition can be strong, malicious, treasure-guarding dead. Gjenganger belong to later Scandinavian revenant folklore and often return with a grievance or a harmful touch.
Campaign Use
Use draugr for burial mounds, cursed treasure, and physical horror. Use gjenganger when the dead expose a social crime the living tried to bury.
