Aunet
Just a couple hours downstream from Þýdal, or about a half day's walk, is the town of Aunet. With longhouses scattered about it looks fairly chaotic, but most of the 60 or so families like it that way. Farm animals roam freely yet everyone knows which animals belong to which families. There is one large (for the town) smithy in the middle of the town near a covered well.
The land around the town is hilly but fertile. The soil is excellent for grazing herds and good for growing vegetables and some grains. Most of the townsfolk have large fenced gardens not too far outside of the town proper.
Another hour downstream by boat, or a quarter of a day's walk west, is the town of Gressli. To the north the hills turn into mountains, and on the southern side of the river is a small swampy area that has lots of wildlife. Further south the land gets hilly then develops into more mountains.
People of Interest
The people of the town look to Karl Guttormson as their Jarl. A tall and strong human, his black flowing hair and carefully braided beard contrast with his sturdy work clothing that is always a light color. He likes for people to be able to identify him from a distance, especially when he is out on his farm plot working the land. His wife Lyv Magnusdottir is known as a gracious host, loving mother, and an excellent cook. She has a collection of pots and cauldrons that is the envy not only of the townsfolk but also of most travelers who visit.
Ulrik Togerson is the master of the town forge. A human of typical height but massive chest and arms, he wields his weight like his hammer. One of the few adult males with no beard, his light brown hair is cut short - working near a forge all day means he is usually hot and sweaty. He is self-assured and strong willed, knowing his worth in the town as a skilled craftsman. His wife Gertrud Leifsdottir owns many sheep. She's an expert at shearing, spinning, and dyeing wool yarn that she sells mostly in the town.
Arvið Brandson has unkempt red hair and an untamed beard. He tends to the largest herd of goats in the town and makes cheese from their milk. He has been known to travel to nearby villages to sell his cheese. His fiery temper and love for mead has kept him from finding a woman willing to marry him, although lately he has been seen spending time with Harja Knutsdottir, who being the daughter of a Firbolg, is capable of putting him in his place when needed.
