Niðaróss is one of the largest and most important towns in Norway during the Viking age. It is nestled deep in the Trondheim fjord and acts as a major port for the area. This page describes our version of it around 800 A.D.
At this time there should be around 1-200 families living here. It isn't quite large enough to support separate permanent business structures like shops, but there is a lively marketplace. Most business activity that doesn't occur in the marketplace happens in individual homes that might have an accessory building.
Ásgeirr Axelson is a jarl in the town. Tall and strong, Asgeirr looks like a good norseman should. His beard is trimmed and his hair is always combed - often it is tied back to stay out of the way, but for some reason he never braids it. He wears clothing that is thick and sturdy but is trimmed with colorful tablet weaving of linen or wool to match the outfit.
Ásgeirr thinks he is favored by the gods, and he lives like it. Having earned a solid reputation in battle, he recently led a raid over the sea to the far side of Caledonia. Bringing back lots of treasure and sharing it well with his crew, he has gained a lot of followers.
Hulda Harsdottir is the wife of Ásgeirr. Tall but thin, Hulda seems frail but her eyes and the way she carries herself tell you that she has faced tough times with grit and determination. Her long blonde hair is always well styled, usually in twin braids that somehow never get in the way of what she is doing. Her clothing seems designed for work but always has some embroidery and is trimmed with silk or good fur. Hulda is the town seer and one of the healers. She is known to read the bones to foretell others' futures.
Torvald Grimstein is a well respected Goliath warrior who not only teaches Glima to most of the town, but he is also a master stonecrafter and stonemason. He loves a good fair fight, especially when the combatants learn from each other.
