A jarl's power comes from land, ships, warriors, gifts, kinship ties, reputation, and the ability to settle or win disputes. Jarls are not interchangeable with modern kings. In many Viking-inspired settings, a jarl is a regional power who must keep followers loyal and rivals cautious. ===== Campaign Use ===== * A patron who hires the party for dangerous work. * A judge or pressure point in a legal dispute. * A rival whose honor must be handled carefully. * A protector whose hall becomes a refuge or target. * A leader whose gifts create obligations. ===== Social Context ===== Jarls stand above most [[culture:freeman|free people]] and far above [[culture:thrall|thralls]], but a wise jarl still needs public support. A jarl who ignores custom, cheats allies, or insults respected householders invites feud. ===== Related Pages ===== * [[culture:thing|Þing]] * [[culture:gothi|Goði]] * [[culture:drengr|Drengr, Víkingr, and Níðingr]] culture/jarl.txt Last modified: 2026/07/04 00:38by Seraphina
