# Character Advancement: XP, Milestone, and Mastery

D&D characters normally advance by experience points or by milestones. For teaching games, especially with new or young players, I often prefer a third method: **Mastery**.

Mastery advancement means characters level up when the players have shown that they understand the important parts of play well enough to add the next layer of complexity.

This is not the same thing as the 2024 D&D weapon mastery rules. This page is about a teaching-focused advancement method.

## XP Advancement

In XP advancement, characters gain experience points for defeating monsters, solving problems, completing quests, or otherwise overcoming challenges. When they reach the next XP threshold, they level up.

XP is useful because it is concrete. Players can see the number go up, and it rewards adventuring activity directly.

The problem in a teaching game is that XP often measures what happened in the adventure, not what the players learned. A player can gain XP while still not understanding their features, spells, equipment, actions, rests, or roleplaying hooks. XP can also over-reward combat if the DM is not careful, because monster XP is the most visible and easiest XP to count.

## Milestone Advancement

In milestone advancement, the DM chooses story moments when the party levels up. The group might level after finishing an adventure, saving a town, reclaiming a ruin, or resolving a major character arc.

Milestone leveling is useful because it keeps the whole party together and removes bookkeeping. It also lets the DM pace the campaign around the story rather than around monster math.

The problem in a teaching game is that milestone leveling can be too invisible. A player may level up because the story reached the right moment, even if they have not yet practiced the rules and character options that the next level builds on.

## Mastery Advancement

In Mastery advancement, each player tracks meaningful uses of important game actions and character options. A player is ready to level when they have shown enough comfort with the current level that adding new rules will be exciting instead of overwhelming.

The exact checklist can vary by campaign, but a good Mastery tracker includes common adventuring skills such as:

- Make a saving throw
- Make a skill check
- Make an attack roll
- Roll with advantage
- Roll with disadvantage
- Use Dash, Disengage, or Dodge
- Take a short rest and spend Hit Dice
- Take a long rest
- Roleplay a character trait or ideal

It should also include the character's own options:

- Class and species features
- Cantrips and important spells
- Leveled spellcasting, for spellcasters
- Magic items or special equipment that require player choices

The point is not to make leveling slow or punitive. The point is to make sure each player has actually used the character they already have.

## How I Use Mastery

Each player can have a Mastery tracker with a few boxes beside each goal. When the player uses that option in a real situation, they mark a box. The use should be meaningful: choosing the option, understanding roughly what it does, and seeing how it affects the scene.

At the end of a session or short arc, the DM can review the tracker and ask:

- Does this player understand the basic d20 flow?
- Has this player used their main class features?
- Has this player practiced their spells, items, or special equipment?
- Has this player tried defensive, movement, rest, and roleplay choices, not only attacks?
- Would gaining the next level help this player, or just add confusion?

The DM still uses judgment. A player does not need every box checked perfectly. A great explanation, a clever plan, helping another player understand a rule, or a strong roleplay moment can all count as evidence of mastery.

## Why Mastery Works Better for Teaching

Mastery makes the learning target visible. Instead of telling a new player, "You can do lots of things," the tracker shows a short list of useful things to try.

Mastery also rewards breadth. A player who only attacks every turn is gently encouraged to try skills, movement, rests, class features, items, and roleplay. A spellcaster is encouraged to learn the difference between cantrips and leveled spells. A rogue is encouraged to practice hiding, positioning, and skill use. A martial character is encouraged to learn when movement and defense matter.

It also helps the DM. If a player has empty boxes beside a feature, that is a signal to create an encounter where the feature matters. If several players have not used short rests, the DM can give them a safe but time-sensitive pause. If nobody has rolled with disadvantage yet, the DM can explain it when it naturally appears rather than dumping every rule on the first day.

Most importantly, Mastery ties advancement to readiness. The player levels up because they are ready for more interesting choices, not merely because enough monsters died or because the story reached the next chapter.

## Practical Guideline

For experienced groups, XP or milestone advancement may be simpler. For classes, clubs, and beginner tables, Mastery is often better because it turns leveling into part of the teaching process.

When a player has practiced the core rules, used their character's main tools, and shown they can make choices without being overwhelmed, they are ready for the next level.
