You served as a member of the Varangian Guard, pledging yourself to defend the Byzantine Emperor. After faithful service, you left. Perhaps you were asked to do something you could not accept. Perhaps the great city of Constantinople became too orderly, too tame, or too far from the life you wanted. Family obligations may have called you home, or you may simply have achieved your goals and returned north as a wealthy and successful veteran.

In any case, service gave you discipline, weapons training, city experience, and some notoriety as a warrior. Now you are interested in something different, though the habits and reputation of mercenary life still follow you.

• Skill Proficiencies: as a seasoned mercenary, you know your weapons and honed your body, developing above-average Athletics. Life in the largest city you had ever heard of also gave you knowledge of History almost without trying.
• Tool Proficiencies: one type of gaming set, Vehicles (land).
• Equipment: a uniform of your company, equivalent in quality to traveler's clothes; an insignia of your rank; a gaming set of your choice; and a pouch containing the remainder of your last wages, 10 gp.

Years in the Varangian Guard or similar companies earned you a reputation.

You can find paid work as a guard, escort, or soldier wherever Norse traders gather, securing food and modest lodging for yourself and companions while employed.

You have advantage on Charisma (Persuasion) or Charisma (Intimidation) checks to negotiate payment for martial services.
