The Staff of Arcane Chaos is Kol Gulkin's very rare magic staff. It requires attunement by a spellcaster with metamagic and lets the wielder spend charges to manipulate arcane spells as they are being cast.

This staff is tipped with a large gleaming gem. It can be used as a quarterstaff and as an arcane focus.

As a reaction when seeing someone casting an arcane spell, or using an item to cast an arcane spell, the wielder can spend charges to manipulate the spell, choosing one of the following effects:

  * Weaken (1 charge): the damage die roll total is halved.
  * Strengthen (2 charges): the damage dice are maximized.
  * Lucky (1 charge): the wielder can cause one damage die of their choice to be the maximum.
  * Unlucky (1 charge): the wielder can cause one damage die of their choice to be a 1.
  * Warp (1 charge): the wielder can change the damage type of the spell to their choice of fire, cold, lightning, or thunder.
  * Permanent (2 charges): if the spell being cast creates a condition, that condition becomes permanent.

The staff has a maximum of 5 charges and recovers 1d4 charges on a long rest.

Notes: attunement by a spellcaster that has metamagic.

During the Battle of Niðaróss, Kol used the staff to coordinate and enhance spellcasting near the northeastern tower. The staff empowered Fireetta, Caleb, Isar, and other casters, turning defensive magic into larger battlefield effects.
