Aetherstone is a magical material tied to Atlantean technology, levitation, the floating shield wall, flying craft, and the fictional [[campaigns:latitude_history:places:aetherstone-islands|Aetherstone Islands]] northeast of Iceland where some ridable dragons live. This is the canonical term; some older source threads use the noncanonical term Aetherite.

During [[campaigns:latitude_history:adventures:fires-at-the-fjordgate|Fires at the Fjordgate]], [[campaigns:latitude_history:characters:mechakirby|MechaKirby]] and Netheril used a device with Aetherstone crystals to project a floating shield wall. The shield wall intercepted boulders, arrows, and hostile magic, then helped reinforce a breach in the northern wall.

[[campaigns:latitude_history:characters:thordak-faerdhal|Thordak Faerdhal]]'s [[campaigns:latitude_history:lore:flying-karve|Flying Karve]] uses an array of Aetherstones around its upper hull to levitate, allowing it to travel through the air when pulled by [[campaigns:latitude_history:characters:skythor|Skythor]] or another flying creature.

Thordak's [[campaigns:latitude_history:places:thordaks-floating-bastion|Floating Bastion]] is a small series of Aetherstone-based floating islands deep in the mountains north of [[campaigns:latitude_history:places:nidaross|Niðaróss]]. It includes buildings and mostly follows the D&D bastion rules.

[[campaigns:latitude_history:adventures:the-lost-voyage-to-sudrey|The Lost Voyage to Suðrey]] and [[campaigns:latitude_history:adventures:the-outpost-beneath-the-aetherstone-tree|The Outpost Beneath the Aetherstone Tree]] found gravity-defying Aetherstone on the fictional [[campaigns:latitude_history:places:aetherstone-islands|Aetherstone Islands]] northeast of Iceland, where small dragons ate the material. One [[campaigns:latitude_history:places:sudrey|Suðrey]]-bound expedition landed there after being driven off course and observed small dragons eating glowing rocks whose magical essence helped them fly and hover. A separate party collected and studied the stones while following [[campaigns:latitude_history:characters:chad-darrelson|Chad Darrelson]]'s patron vision toward an Atlantean outpost.

In [[campaigns:latitude_history:adventures:the-outpost-beneath-the-aetherstone-tree|The Outpost Beneath the Aetherstone Tree]], [[campaigns:latitude_history:characters:netheril-faerdhal|Netheril Faerdhal]] used the [[campaigns:latitude_history:lore:orb-of-crafting|Orb of Crafting]] to empower Aetherstone crystals into fully enhanced anti-gravity items. She attached one to a rope so the remaining party members could escape the cave after the rope was cut, and the party then gathered enough wood and Aetherstone to build a levitating longship that [[campaigns:latitude_history:characters:skythor|Skythor]] could pull.
