England

England is the Norse-facing page title used here for England. In a Viking-age campaign, it represents the wealthy southern lands across the North Sea: kingdoms, towns, monasteries, markets, fortified burhs, river routes, and conflict with Norse armies and settlers.

England can be used as a source of silver, rumor, Christian politics, mercenary work, hostage exchanges, and consequences from raids or alliances.

• Eoforwic (York): Northumbrian royal, ecclesiastical, and trading center. This is the pre-Viking name; Jórvík belongs to the later Scandinavian-ruled period.
• Bebbanburh (Bamburgh): Northumbrian coastal stronghold and royal fortress in Bernicia, close to Lindisfarne.
• Lindisfarne: Holy island monastery and major Northumbrian religious center; the 793 raid made it infamous across Christian Europe.
• Wearmouth-Jarrow: Monastic learning center associated with Bede; another northern church target in the early Viking raids.
• Lundenwic (London): Mercian-influenced trading settlement west of the old Roman walls, important for Thames and North Sea trade.
• Cantwaraburh (Canterbury): Seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the main southern church center.
• Tamworth: Principal Mercian royal center in Offa's era, useful for Mercian politics and royal authority.
